The final All-Hamlet Community Forum was held Saturday, May 22nd from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai. Go to the Community Planning Forums page for more information on this and all other public sessions. The Study Area runs from Mount Sinai to Wading River, and is ten (10) miles in length and contains approximately 1,600-acres and 515-tax parcels. Zoning is predominantly residential, with the remainder commercial, industrial, PDD or split-zoned. Significant properties within the Corridor include the 5,300-acre NYS DEC Rocky Point Nature Preserve; and the approximately 820-acre Keyspan and 58-acre LIPA properties in Shoreham. Click here for a map of the study area.Over the years, the Town of Brookhaven has undertaken a series of individual Hamlet Studies in the Corridor Study Area including the following, see the "Related Studies" link on the side menu. In 1997,
a widening of NYS Route 25A was completed in Mount Sinai, Miller Place,
and Rocky Point, and a 1.4 mile By-Pass was constructed south of the
Rocky Point Business District to Shoreham. Proposed bypasses through
South Setauket to the west of the Study Area and Mount Sinai were never
constructed. The traffic improvements, together with substantial population
growth in the area, has resulted in a marked increase in Corridor traffic,
peak hour congestion, vehicular accidents, and decreased pedestrian
safety.
